AmeriCorps members serve Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity in a myriad of ways, leading and supporting volunteers. It is our pleasure to introduce these valuable members of our team: the 2021 service-term volunteers.

Meet the new members of our team!

Matt

Matt is a medical student from Duluth, Minnesota, who graduated from University of Wisconsin Madison with a degree in neuroscience. He enjoys hiking, fishing, camping, other outdoor activities, and played rugby in college. Before moving to Tacoma, Matt worked at an assisted living facility for seniors with dementia. Currently taking a gap year, Matt has been working on med school applications and has received offers from multiple schools. He thought AmeriCorps service with Habitat would be a great way to help others and get a change of pace. After being accepted as an AmeriCorps member, he drove from Duluth to Tacoma and made it here on New Year’s Eve. Matt really likes Tacoma and has already been on several hikes here.

Jessica

Jessica is from Ohio. She went to Kent State and got her undergrad in architecture, then got a master’s degree in architecture, landscape design, and urban design. She worked as an architect at a firm in Cleveland for three years, but unfortunately lost her job because of COVID. Jessica says that while her job paid the bills, it wasn’t really what she wanted to do. She mostly worked on commercial buildings, but is more interested in designing single-family housing. Jessica decided that working with Habitat would be a great way to approach that field. Her hobbies include sculpting with clay and concrete and she looks forward to adding more hands-on skills to her repertoire, especially woodworking.
